Our Methodology

How we test

We don’t rank courses off a spreadsheet of features. Someone here signs up, pays like any other student, and actually does the work — then writes down what held up and what quietly fell apart. This page is the whole method, so you can judge our judgments.

The short version

If you only read one thing before trusting a review here, read this.

  • We pay for our own accounts. No free press access, no comped subscriptions that quietly soften a verdict.
  • We build something real on every platform — a finished course, a project, a portfolio piece — not a five-minute click-around.
  • We live with a tool for weeks, across desktop and mobile, so the review reflects the boring parts too.
  • We score against the same rubric every time, then re-check whenever a platform changes its price or product.
  • Commissions change our income, never the score. The two are kept in separate rooms, on purpose.
The process

Step by step, every single time

1

We sign up and pay

Every account starts the way yours would: full price, no reviewer perks. We note the checkout, the upsells, and the things that are easy to sign up for and strangely hard to cancel.

2

We build real coursework

We pick actual courses and finish them — assignments, quizzes, the certificate at the end. A platform feels very different once you’re three modules deep and genuinely stuck.

3

We live with it for weeks

Reviews come after weeks of daily use. That’s the only way to catch lessons that buffer, support inboxes that never reply, and content that hasn’t been touched since 2019.

4

We score, publish, re-check

We grade against a fixed rubric, publish the verdict with a name attached, and set a reminder to revisit. Prices move and courses get refreshed; a stale review helps no one.

The scorecard

What actually goes into a score

Six things, weighted the same way on every review. The bars show how much each one counts.

Teaching quality25% of score
Are the instructors clear, current, and actually good at teaching — not just famous names on a thumbnail?
Value for money20% of score
What you pay against what you walk away with, subscriptions and quiet auto-renewals included.
Course depth & quality20% of score
How current, complete, and well-produced the actual lessons are once you’re inside them.
Platform experience15% of score
Speed, apps, downloads, and whether the interface gets out of your way or fights you.
Support & community10% of score
How fast real help arrives, and whether fellow learners add anything worth staying for.
Outcomes & credibility10% of score
Do the certificates carry weight, and do learners actually finish with something to show?

Where the money stops and the review begins

Whitmore Education is reader-supported. When you buy through some of our links, the platform pays us a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model, and we’d rather explain it in plain language than bury it in a footer.

Here is the line we don’t cross: a commission never buys a better score. We review platforms we earn nothing from, we keep low scores on platforms that pay us, and the person testing a course never sees the commission rate attached to it. If that ever stopped being true, the reviews would be worthless — to you and to us.

Found something we got wrong? We fix it, and we say what changed and when. The full policy lives in our editorial standards, and the money side is spelled out in how we make money.

Who does the testing

Real reviews need a real name

Reviews here are led by Pragya Jha, who has spent years buying, testing, and writing about online courses and the platforms behind them. Every verdict is signed, so you always know who stood behind the call.
