The short version of this MasterClass review: it’s the best-produced learning library online and one of the weakest for building job skills. For a yearly fee between $120 and $840, you get beautifully filmed classes from more than 200 famous experts. On the entry Standard plan you don’t get exercises, feedback or a credential, so it works best as inspiration, not as training.

That makes MasterClass easy to love and easy to regret, depending on what you expect. This review covers what a membership includes in 2026, what each class really costs you, the paid extras MasterClass has added this year and the kinds of people who get the most from it. Everything is based on MasterClass’s own help center, its app listings and patterns in member reviews, checked in November 2026. We scored it 6.7 out of 10 on our learning platform rubric, and the breakdown sits at the top of this page.

Key takeaways
  • Price: one yearly payment of $120, $360 or $840. You can’t pay month to month, and new customers can’t start with a trial.
  • Format: short video lessons of about 5 to 10 minutes, grouped into classes that run a few hours each.
  • Best at: cooking, writing, filmmaking, music and big-picture business thinking from people at the top of their fields.
  • Weakest at: hands-on practice and credentials. Certificates are now a separate paid product.
  • Safety net: a 30-day refund on first purchases made on the MasterClass website.

What MasterClass Is, and What It Isn’t

MasterClass is a streaming library of video classes taught by famous practitioners: chefs, novelists, filmmakers, athletes, musicians and business leaders. Its app listing describes 200+ expert instructors and thousands of lessons, cut into bite-size segments.

The easiest way to understand it is to compare it with a documentary service rather than a school. Each class is a filmed conversation with someone at the top of their field, explaining how they think about their craft. You watch, you take notes and you come away with ideas. You don’t submit work, take graded quizzes or get feedback from anyone.

That’s the core trade-off of every MasterClass review you’ll read. If you want to hear how a celebrated chef thinks about seasoning, nothing online comes close. If you want to become a data analyst or pass a certification exam, MasterClass is the wrong tool.

We created a free MasterClass account to see what you get before paying. The home page and menu load, but there are no classes to watch until you buy a plan.

What a MasterClass Membership Includes

Every plan unlocks the same classes. The differences between plans are about how many people can watch and where. Here’s what comes with a membership:

  • The full class library. Every class from every instructor, with new ones added through the year.
  • Short lessons. Lessons run about 5 to 10 minutes, so you can finish one on a coffee break.
  • Workbooks. Most classes include a downloadable guide with exercises and notes from the instructor.
  • Audio mode. You can listen to lessons like a podcast while you drive or walk.
  • Apps on most screens. MasterClass runs on the web, phones, tablets and TV devices, including Apple TV.
  • Offline downloads on higher plans. According to MasterClass, downloads are a Plus and Pro feature, and they work only in the phone and tablet apps.

The three plans at a glance

PlanYearly priceSimultaneous streamsDownloads in the app
Standard ($10 a month)$1201No
Plus ($30 a month, 1 Certificate)$3602Yes
Pro ($70 a month, all Certificates)$8406Yes

MasterClass’s plans page, checked through a US connection on November 1, 2026, lists Standard, Plus and Pro as monthly figures billed annually. Its help center confirms that it doesn’t offer monthly billing, so “$10 a month” in an ad means $120 paid upfront.

What Each MasterClass Class Really Costs You

The sticker price looks cheap next to most learning platforms. Whether it’s actually good value depends on one number: how many classes you’ll finish in a year. Here’s what a Standard membership works out to per class:

Classes you finish in a yearStandard at $120Standard bought at 50% off ($60)
2$60 per class$30 per class
5$24 per class$12 per class
10$12 per class$6 per class
20$6 per class$3 per class

Two classes a year makes MasterClass one of the most expensive ways to learn anything. Ten or more makes it cheaper than almost any single online course. Most regret comes from the first group: people who join for one instructor, watch that class and forget the membership until it renews.

A good test before you buy: write down five classes you’d watch in the next three months. If you can’t name five, the membership probably isn’t for you yet.

Where MasterClass Shines

MasterClass is strongest in subjects where taste, judgment and storytelling matter as much as technique. These categories tend to get the best reactions from members:

  • Cooking. Watching a top chef explain why they make each choice, then trying the recipe yourself, is the format at its best.
  • Writing. Novelists, screenwriters and journalists talk through how they plan, draft and edit, with workbook exercises to follow.
  • Film, photography and music. Practical demonstrations from people who’ve done the work at the highest level.
  • Leadership and communication. Big-picture thinking on negotiation, persuasion and decision-making from well-known executives and experts.

Production quality is the other standout. Classes are filmed like television, with multiple cameras, good lighting and clear audio. Even reviewers who don’t recommend MasterClass for learning tend to agree it’s a pleasure to watch.

Where MasterClass Falls Short

  • No practice built in. There are no assignments, graded quizzes or instructor feedback in the membership. Learning depends on how much of the workbook you actually do.
  • No credential with the membership. Finishing a class doesn’t give you a certificate you can list on a resume.
  • Uneven depth. Some classes are packed with technique, while others feel more like an inspiring interview than a lesson.
  • Few technical subjects. You won’t find coding, data analysis, cloud or IT training here.
  • Annual billing only, and no trial. You pay for a full year upfront, and renewal charges aren’t refundable.

New in 2026: Certificates and Paid Extras

MasterClass has started selling more structured learning on top of the membership. Some are tied to higher plans or sold separately, so don’t expect them with the $120 Standard plan:

  • MasterClass Certificates. Longer programs of roughly 10 to 20 hours with projects, quizzes and a shareable certificate, built with partners such as Microsoft and the Navy SEAL Foundation. The Plus plan includes one Certificate and Pro includes all of them, and MasterClass explains the options on its certificate pricing page.
  • MasterClass On Call. An AI coaching product modeled on specific instructors, sold separately from the class library. Check the current price on MasterClass before you buy it.

The certificate programs fix MasterClass’s biggest weakness, since they add real practice and proof of completion. They also push the total cost well past the headline price, so decide whether you need them before you add them to the cart.

What Members Say About MasterClass

Across app store reviews, Trustpilot and Reddit, member feedback lands in a few clear camps. Fans praise the instructors, the production and the feeling of learning directly from someone they admire. Many say a single class, often cooking or writing, was worth the year on its own.

Critics say the classes are more motivational than practical, and that they stopped opening the app after a few weeks. The most common billing complaint is an unexpected renewal charge for a second year. Because MasterClass won’t refund a renewal, switch auto-renew off in your account settings as soon as you join and decide again next year.

How to Get More Out of a MasterClass Membership

Members who stick with MasterClass tend to use it differently from people who cancel. A few habits make the biggest difference:

  • Pick a class with a project in mind. Choose a cooking class when you want to learn a set of dishes, or a writing class while you’re working on a draft. Watching with a goal turns inspiration into practice.
  • Do the workbook, not just the videos. The exercises are the closest thing MasterClass has to homework, and they’re where most of the skill-building happens.
  • Use audio mode for the talk-heavy classes. Business, leadership and storytelling classes work well as listening while you commute or exercise.
  • Share the plan if you can. Pro split across a household of six works out to $140 a person a year and includes every Certificate.
  • Set a renewal reminder. Put a note in your calendar a week before your year ends and decide then whether to keep it.

If you want to make things rather than watch experts talk about them, Skillshare’s project-based classes are a better fit. If you need a credential, Coursera is the stronger choice. MasterClass wins when the goal is perspective from people you’d never otherwise get to learn from.

Who Should Subscribe to MasterClass?

You love learning for its own sake and watch documentaries for fun

Subscribe. You’ll likely watch enough classes to make the yearly price cheap.

You’re a home cook, writer or creative hobbyist

Subscribe, and do the workbook exercises. That’s where most of the real learning happens.

Several people in your home would use it

Pick Pro if your household will use the Certificates. Shared by six people it’s $140 each a year. Otherwise, Standard at $120 is the cheapest way in.

You need job skills or a resume credential

Skip the membership. Look at Coursera, or at a MasterClass Certificate if a specific program fits.

You only want one instructor’s class

Wait for a sale, or ask a member for a Guest Pass so you can watch before paying.

MasterClass Review FAQs

Is MasterClass worth it in 2026?

It’s worth it if you’ll finish several classes a year and want inspiration from top experts. It’s not worth it if you need practical job skills, feedback or a certificate.

Can you try MasterClass for free?

Not for new buyers. Instead, MasterClass offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee on first purchases made on its website. Members can also send a Guest Pass with temporary free access.

Do you get a certificate from MasterClass?

Not with a regular membership. Certificates come only from MasterClass Certificate programs, which are sold separately.

Can you cancel MasterClass anytime?

You can turn off auto-renewal anytime, and you keep access until your year ends. Refunds are limited to the 30-day guarantee, and renewal charges aren’t refunded.

Is MasterClass good for beginners?

Yes for curious beginners in cooking, writing or creative subjects. Lessons are approachable, but they won’t walk you through skills step by step the way a structured course does.

Bottom Line on MasterClass

MasterClass is a wonderful subscription if you treat it as inspiration. Watch widely, do the workbook exercises and keep an eye on your renewal date. If you need practice, feedback or a credential, put your money into a structured course instead.

If you do join, pay on masterclass.com rather than in an app, since that’s where the 30-day guarantee covers you, and give yourself a few weeks to watch at least five classes before deciding it’s not for you.
